Mandate 6-Month Time Limit for Child Custody Determinations

The Issue

Join us and sign our petition if you believe that there should be a time limit mandated on child custody determinations.

There is immense damage inflicted by prolonged litigation in family and matrimonial courts. Children and families are destroyed due to these drawn-out processes, allowed to extend for several years under the current system.

Parents miss work and jeopardize their jobs to prepare and attend endless court appearances. Savings, retirements assets, homes and college funds are liquidated for legal fees. Parents are left exhausted and financially decimated, and suffer long-term health and emotional consequences as a result of the uncertainty, stress and trauma of being in court for so long.

It's time we demand change. We need legislation that mandates and enforces a common sense, reasonable time limit on child custody determinations. This will not only reduce the financial impact of litigation, but will also minimize the trauma experienced by families trapped in these courts, while easing congestion in the courts, allowing more time for the cases involving abuse.

We are calling for legislation to mandate and enforce that judges deliver child custody and visitation determinations within six months of the preliminary conference in any contested child custody case. Note, if the case includes an allegation of abuse or safety concerns, the case will follow a different track.

We urge lawmakers to prioritize this issue - for our children's sake, for our future's sake.
