Mandate 30% Green Space in Residential Apartments to Combat Heatwaves & Pollution in India
The Issue
India is experiencing one of the fastest rates of urbanization in the world. But this growth comes at a heavy cost—rampant deforestation, loss of green spaces, and a dangerous rise in pollution and urban heat.
In the race to build more housing, we’re losing the very trees and green zones that protect us. Cities are turning into concrete jungles, leading to:
- Unbearable heatwaves
- Alarming levels of air pollution
- Drying groundwater levels
- Deteriorating mental and physical health
🌳 We demand that a minimum of 30% of total area in all residential apartment projects across India be legally mandated for green space.
This includes areas for trees, parks, native plants, and rainwater harvesting systems.
Why is this important?
Trees are natural air conditioners. Just one mature tree can cool an area as much as 10 air conditioners running 20 hours a day.
Urban forests reduce pollution, support biodiversity, and help recharge groundwater.
Children and families need access to green zones for mental health and wellbeing.
We call upon:
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
State Urban Development Authorities
Real Estate Regulatory Authorities (RERA) to immediately update construction guidelines and urban planning laws to make green space mandatory in all upcoming and ongoing residential apartment projects.
Let’s build cities where people and nature can coexist. Let’s make India a country of livable cities—not just tall buildings.
