I am tired of arguing with my sons about wearing a cycle helmet, only to be told  “it’s not cool, no one wears one, don’t be a killjoy!” 

A friend’s husband and my brother-in-law, both keen cyclists, escaped more serious injuries after a road accident because they were wearing helmets.

On a recent bike ride with friends I was shocked that I was the only one wearing a helmet out of 5 adults and 3 teenagers. I was teased good-naturedly called “Fun Police” and “Helmet W....r” and for a change it was refreshing to be the “sensible” one in a group! However, if made compulsorythere would be no question, teenagers wouldn’t worry about “looking cool” and the risk of serious injury following an accident is massively reduced.

You wouldn’t dream of driving without a seat belt, you wouldn’t ski, ride a horse or a moped without a helmet! During lockdown more people have been out cycling which is great, but I can’t believe the number with no helmets.
