Petition government to change visa regulations

This petition had 6,838 supporters

There has been a 7% decrease in tourist arrivals since the introduction of strict new visa regulations in South Africa, which will inevitably have enormous consequences for the tourism sector in South Africa.

The DA has therefore launched this online petition for all South Africans and those abroad to register their disapproval of these destructive new regulations, and to express support for our proposal to institute electronic visas.

There is a real risk that we could lose jobs if these draconian travel regulations are not changed.

The financial cost of introducing biometric data capturing on arrival will be much lower than the economic cost of scaring off tourists, trade and investment.

In addition, estimates are that the government will have to invest more than R40m in a public relations campaign to help repair the brand damage caused by negative perceptions of these new measures in the global market.

In Parliament, the DA Shadow Minister for Tourism, James Vos, has consistently called for the reconsideration of these regulations. Calls that have fallen on deaf ears.

Research undertaken by Tourism Business Council of South Africa indicate that the country may lose 270 000 international tourists and in turn lose 21 000 jobs each year - costing the country R9.7 billion.

The DA believes that we must protect the tourism industry from regulations that will destroy opportunities and our international brand as a destiny of choice for business and leisure.

We believe the introduction of electronic visas and biometrics on arrival will not only provide a real means for protecting jobs in tourism, but will present significant advantages by cutting turnaround times for the issuing of travel documentation, and are in fact more secure than existing permits.

Electronic visas have proven to be highly effective in comparable countries such as Turkey.

By signing the DA’s petition, the people of South Africa will send a clear message to government that South Africans want laws and regulations that create jobs for our people.
