Introduce a Law on Assisted Death in Malta
I am Marlene Magro, and on behalf of my husband Joe, am calling on Maltese parliamentarians to have mercy and welcome our request to adopt a law on assisted death.
I am writing on his behalf, as due to his condition, Joe cannot write, as he is unable to perform many other tasks that he used to perform on a daily basis. In fact, Joe suffers from ALS, which is a degenerative disease that leads those affected by it to become paralysed, something that distresses Joe a lot.
Both myself and our children, as well as other family members of ours, understand Joe, because no-one would like to end in a similar situation. Joe always insists with us that should this law not be introduced, before he ends up in such a terrible state he will have no choice but to commit suicide. This scares me a lot as I know that if that was to take place I will have a hard time to live with the knowledge that Joe could live longer with everyone around him, and that his death took place in dignity and within his family setting.
With the introduction of a law on assisted death, Joe will be able to live peacefully for a while longer.
I thus repeat our call upon Maltese parliamentarians to adopt a law on assisted death so that Joe will put his mind at rest with the knowledge that should he need this sort of assistance, he will find it.
Jiena Marlene Magro, f'isem l-għażiż żewġi Joe, bil-ħniena qed nitolob lill-parlamentari Maltin sabiex jilqgħu t-talba li qed nagħmlu sabiex f’Malta tkun legalizzata il-mewt assistita.
Qed nikteb f'ismhu għaliex minħabba l-kundizzjoni tiegħu Joe diġà ma jistax jikteb bħalma ma jistax jagħmel diversi affarijiet oħra li kien jagħmel ta’ kuljum. Joe filfatt isofri mill-ALS li hija marda deġenerattiva u minħabba fiha wieħed jispiċċa pparalizzat, xi ħaga li Joe jibża’ ħafna minnha.
Kemm jiena u t-tfal, kif ukoll familjari oħra nifmuh għax ħadd minna ma jixtieq jispiċċa f'dik is-sitwazzjoni. Joe dejjem jinsisti magħna li qabel ma jasal f'dik l-estremità, jekk ma tkunx introdotta liġi dwar il-mewt assistita, ma tibqalux għażla oħra ħlief li jara kif se jagħmel suwiċidju, xi ħaga li tbeżżani mhux ftit għax naf li kieku ma nkunx nista’ ngħix bi kwieti kull meta naħseb li seta’ jgħix aktar fit-tul u b’kulħadd madwaru, u li mewtu kienet mewta dinjituża fis-sliem u l-ġabra tal-familja.
Permezz tal-introduzzjoni tal-mewt assistita Joe ikun jista’ jgħix trankwillament għal aktar żmien.
Intenni għaldaqstant it-talba tagħna sabiex il-parlamentari Maltin jintroduċu u jaddottaw liġi dwar il-mewt assistita sabiex Joe ikollu moħħu mistrieħ li jekk jiġi bżonn din l-assistenza, ikollu lil min jgħinu.
