NO MARINAS IN MARSASKALA

NO MARINAS IN MARSASKALA
The Issue
Marsascala residents love their tranquil bay with its characteristics based on the original small fishing village. The recent proposal to create a massive yacht marina in the bay accomodating approx 700 boats will effectively ruin the bay for an eternity, swimming off the rocks will not be possible due to fouling from large sea craft, marine life will die off, protected posidonia grass will be destroyed - when migratory species such as the Loggerhead sea turtle pass through Maltese waters, they stop to rest and feed in these Posidonia meadows. Thus by protecting and managing human activities in areas where we know Posidonia meadows occur we are also protecting important species such as the Loggerhead turtle which pass through these meadows, like Diana our current turtle visitor.
The ' Maghluq' which is also a protected water nature reserve home of the endangered killifish ( buzaqq) and which depends on the flow of fresh water from the bay will choke to death with the fouling and detritus left in the bay. It is a protected Natura 2000 site under EU listing.
We the people recognise the need for pleasure and fishing boats in the bay to be well organised and regulated in a timely manner, with properly placed aligned and numbered buoys and with registered owners abiding by Malta Maritime rules and guidelines rather than a free for all. Destroying our bay with several pontoons is not an acceptable solution. For this reason we demand an informative public consultation to include input from all residents, business, other stakeholders, as well as an independent EIA and consultations with other environmental experts, followed by a referendum to decide on the future of our bay which will have an impact on future generations to come.
