The immediate resignation of Maldives Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh

The immediate resignation of Maldives Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh
The Issue
In light of the No-confidence motion against Speaker Maseeh filed with 45 signatures, he shall immediately resign from Parliament Speaker.
The people of the country believes his alleged unfair conduct, disregard of the rule of law and parliamentary procedures as well as his role in eroding checks and balances and “subverting Maldivian democracy”.
Majority of the Parliament members accused Maseeh of denying ministers, judges, and heads of independent institutions the right to reply before they were removed, and of “deliberately ignoring requests from MPs to summon government officials for questioning on matters of public importance and national development.
While it is the speaker’s duty to ensure fair and substantial debate on legislation and issues, parliamentarians are not afforded sufficient time or opportunity to review important bills. The speaker routinely tables bills, committee reports and other issues of national interest without due notice, in a deliberate attempt to obstruct parliamentarians’ work.
The speaker has unilaterally cancelled sessions of parliament citing ‘no work’, while numerous crucial legislation and issues remain to be debated. The speaker’s actions have eroded public trust in the parliament.
Considering mentioned points, the people of the Maldives demand for his immediate resignation in order to enable the role of the parliament and to gain the public trust in the Parliament.
