For a long time now bullying in Maldivian schools have been ignored largely because there has been a lack of understanding by adults in general on how cruel and devastating bullying can be to children. However recently the effects of bullying have come to the news in Maldives and it has shocked many in the country.
The victims of bullying in Maldives, mainly children, and teenagers, have no real source of help because there is no law to actually protect them and hold bullies accountable for their repeated actions.
Almost every politician from every political party, every member of Parliament in Maldives has children and they all love their children more than anything. We in Maldives, in general, spoil our children at every opportunity we get. Hence we are sure that if there is enough support for change, then in a small country like Maldives, the politicians of the country will make it happen.
What we call for is for Maldivian politicians and MPs to come together to help their country's people to make the following form of bullying illegal:
- violence or assault
- repeated harassment or intimidation, eg name calling, threats and abusive phone calls, emails or text messages
The above form of bullying is already illegal in the UK and other countries and it has given way to NGOs and others to make a real difference using legal means to help victims of bullying.
