Stop the Plebiscite - Urgent $200 million needed in Queensland to reduce Suicide Rate now
The issue
This is my son who I lost to suicide because there are insufficient services inside and outside the hospital system in Queensland. Suicidal people are being turned away, treated with disrespect, and not given appropriate care in this life threatening situation at Queensland hospital emergency departments. There are no beds available and the ones that are available have antiquated treatment processes, that more often than not harm the patient rather than providing adequate care. Lives are being lost on a daily basis. The West Moreton Region has the second overall highest suicide rate in the State and double the national average, and yet services are virtually non existent. We have no youth psychotic ward and we have no safe place for someone who is suicidal. A suicidal person does not need a locked ward, they need pain management, respect and appropriate care. The whole system needs reform, but unless financial support is available at a State and Federal level this cannot be achieved. Please give us the $200 million that would be spent on a needless plebiscite on marriage equality and start saving the lives of those people by putting the money where it is really needed. Suicide rates are double that of road accidents and increasing. This is a medical and social emergency. Patients need to be given the same care as if they are having a heart attack, because the risk is the same. Their life is at risk, and like a heart attack, timely appropriate intervention is the key to saving a life. Please put the money where it is really needed and just pass the marriage equality bill.
