Close down the Zoo Negara Malaysia
The Issue
We strongly urge the Malaysian Zoological Society, the Zoo Negara Malaysia and the Malaysian federal government to shut down the zoo for good and send these animals to the animal sanctuaries as soon as possible.
Due to the pandemic, Malaysian zoo is asking for an urgent public donation to sustain the well-being of the animals in the facility. (https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2020/03/579402/zoo-negara-needs-urgent-donations Such urgent plead for public donation reveals that the zoo has received less funding from the federal government of Malaysia to sustain its operation. In short, the Malaysian government has shown little interests in welfare of the caged wild animals in the zoo, hence the zoo has been relying on tickets and selling of merchandise to sustain the expenses of the zoo.
As the funds are running low, it is most timely now for the Malaysian Zoological Society to close down the facility for good and send those animals to other animal sanctuaries where they can live their remaining lives more comfortably. We believe that:
- It is clear now that the zoo is unable of achieving its visions and missions. (https://www.zoonegaramalaysia.my/zoo.html To continue keeping these animals in the zoo is cruel and exploitative.
- We, in the current rapid technology advancement, do not need to watch caged animals for education. It is counter-productive.
- Videos of wild animals in their natural habitats can be easily available on the internet.
- Keep these animals in cages are not conservative, but the exact opposite.
- Training and research can be done by collaborating with animal sanctuaries around the Southeast Asian Region, worldwide. Not necessarily have to cage the animals for life.
We strongly urge the Malaysian Zoological Society, the Zoo Negara Malaysia and the Malaysian federal government to shut down the zoo for good and send these animals to the animal sanctuaries as soon as possible.
