Unblock in Malaysia

This petition had 450 supporters

Background is a publishing platform founded by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. It is widely used by organizations and individuals to publish professional and non-professional content.

In January of 2016, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (or the abbreviation, MCMC, or "Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia" in Bahasa Melayu) blocked all Malaysians from accessing due to articles published by a controversial content publisher. MCMC had earlier requested to remove these articles but because they failed to provide evidence to support the request, left the articles up.

Dangerous Precedent

Such blanket censorship of an entire platform is harmful to Internet communities in general. It not only interrupts content providers from within the country to continue using the service, but also prevents users in Malaysia from accessing millions of useful creative content on that platform.

With the reason given, this government agency has set a dangerous precedent for censorship by blocking access to an entire platform due to a relatively small number of undesirable content.

You may or may not be a user. Today, the ban either bothers you or means little to you, but one day, the same reason can be used to block your favorite content websites such as Wikipedia, YouTube, or Wordpress.

If you agree with us, please sign this petition to demand MCMC for:

  • Immediate action to unblock
  • Guideline and principles used to protect a platform and its users, both providers and consumers, from online censorship. (Or, "How does MCMC uphold digital rights?")
  • Guideline on how to appeal censorship decisions.
