Making Judiciary transparent: Justice J. Chelameswar has shown the way
The Issue
Shri T.S.Thakur,
The Chief Justice of India.
Sir,
There is considerable dissatisfaction with the judiciary in India. This stems from the fact that it does not accept the aspiration of the citizens of our democracy for a transparent and accountable judiciary. This has become a greater area of concern since the advent of the Right to Information Act. There are too many instances of the judiciary not abiding by the requirements of the law. There has also been considerable disappointment with the judiciary’s unwillingness to accept responsibility for its poor performance and the appointment of judges.
Justice J. Chelameswar has now openly voiced his unhappiness at the current state of affairs and stayed away from the collegium meeting to express his protest. Sir, the nation needs a strong and good judiciary. This will come with transparency and accountability to the masters of our democracy,- the citizens. You have a great opportunity to convert this into an opportunity to become a role model for nation. Please consider accepting transparency and accountability in the appointment of judges with due respect to the citizens and their elected representatives. This is the need of the hour and citizens back the position taken by Justice J. Chelameswar. Democracy works with the checks and balances between the various estates being allowed to operate. The judiciary must accept this as pointed out by the Justice J. Chelameswar. Humility and acceptance of his view is in the interest of the judiciary and the nation.
