Why this petition matters

ATTENTION MICHIGAN VOTERS: Child safety should always be the first priority in custody decisions in Michigan Family Court. Many children are ordered to live with an abusive parent because Judges and Guardians ad litem do not understand domestic abuse and do not believe victims when they report abuse. Since the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) has passed, there is federal money available for Michigan to educate judges and court personnel involved in custody decisions on all aspects of domestic abuse including emotional abuse, child abuse, trauma, coercive control, and child sexual abuse. I have been personally affected by the lack of understanding of domestic abuse in Michigan Family Courts. It is time for domestic abuse victims to be believed, for their trauma to be understood, and for child safety to be given precedence in custody decisions. I am asking all Michigan legislators to support a Kayden's Law for Michigan to educate judges on domestic violence, prioritize child safety, prevent removal of children from a safe parent's home, limit family court experts to those with training in domestic abuse, and restrict dangerous therapy treatments for children that are not evidence-based, safe, and effective.
