There are humane ways of slaughtering crustaceans (e.g., lobsters, crabs)

Did you know that, like other animals, crustaceans can experience pain, distress, and other feelings? They are sentient beings, as are cows, dogs, cats and chickens.

GentleWays for OurPlanet needs your help! Our goal is to protect crustaceans under Ontario’s Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act.  

According to a recent London School of Economics review of over 300 scientific studies, there is now strong evidence that decapod crustaceans are sentient creatures capable of feeling pain, distress, and joy. 

Currently, Canadian legislation does not protect crustaceans from inhumane practices, such as boiling and dismembering live, conscious lobsters and crabs. These animals can be humanely and inexpensively stunned prior to being prepared for consumption. 

Our efforts follow recommendations from the Animal Protection Index, and the leadership of countries who have already taken measures to acknowledge crustacean sentience (e.g., New Zealand, Switzerland, UK, Spain). 

To support our campaign and protect these animals from unnecessary suffering, please sign this petition. We are calling on ALL ONTARIANS to sign in order to show our leaders that this is an important issue to voters.
