The Issue

Today, while driving on a Texas highway, my windshield was struck for the eighth time by debris thrown from the tires of a semi-truck. This dangerous incident is not an isolated one but a frequent experience for many drivers across the state. The forceful propulsion of debris at high speeds poses a significant hazard, not just to vehicles, but to the safety of all road users. A shattered windshield can severely impair visibility, startle drivers, and result in crashes.

Currently, the responsibility and financial burden for these damages fall unfairly on the motorists who suffer them. Having to replace or repair your windshield due to debris is costly and stress-inducing, and it shouldn’t be regarded as merely an unavoidable inconvenience. Drivers should not have to accept property damage or potential injury as the price of sharing the road with commercial vehicles.

Federal regulations regarding commercial trucks have not evolved sufficiently to address the challenges and safety expectations of modern traffic scenarios. Wheel wells on semi-trucks can significantly reduce the amount of road debris being thrown, yet such safety measures remain optional rather than mandatory.

Implementing mandatory wheel wells on all semi-trucks will not only decrease the frequency of windshield damage but also enhance overall road safety. Although some trucking companies have voluntarily installed wheel wells, this must become a nationwide requirement to ensure comprehensive safety.

By mandating the use of wheel wells, we can protect drivers from preventable harm, reduce accidents, and mitigate additional costs for individual motorists. Such a regulation would represent a proactive step towards making highways safer for everyone.

Every state’s leaders have a responsibility to prioritize public safety. By joining this campaign, you can help advance a critical initiative towards safer road conditions. Please sign the petition urging Texas policymakers to make wheel wells mandatory on all semi-trucks traveling our highways.
