Make Walker Mill Road Safer by Reducing Dangerous Driving!

The Issue

All of us in the Millwood Waterford community have been impacted by the dangerous driving on Walker Mill Road. I, alongside many others in our community, have lived in anxiety as we witness increasing instances of dangerous driving - speeding, illegal passing, and disregard for pedestrian safety. My husband was nearly struck by a vehicle that was illegally passing another car using the shoulder. There is no safe way to cross the street from our neighborhood when walking to Walker Mill Park, which is an excellent community resource. Tragically, our distressing list of incidents includes frequent car accidents, punctuated by a recent fatal motorcycle accident on October 5, 2024.

Our plea is not only for our sake. Walker Mill Road is a main road in our neighborhood. While it is traveled by hundreds of people each day, there are also people who live directly on this road. Its safety directly impacts our ability to enjoy our community resources and daily activities.

It is, without doubt, time for a change. We call upon responsible authorities to implement necessary safety measures to reduce speeding and illegal passing, thereby making it safer for both motorists and pedestrians. Speed cameras to issue citations when cars speed or pass illegally would be extremely beneficial in this area, as well as increased traffic patrol. Traffic calming techniques such as speed humps, medians, or curb extensions are effective remedies that we propose. These measures have proven to be influential in reducing driving speeds and traffic incidents in numerous communities, as detailed in the World Health Organization's Global Status Report on Road Safety 2018.

This is a matter of life and death. It is time to transform Walker Mill Road into a safer passage for all. Please, join us in reclaiming our community's safety. Sign this petition and lend your voice to our cause.
