Make veterinary pricing fair and transparent... for pets and their families

The Issue

Make veterinary pricing fair and transparent … for pets and their families

Vet bills in the UK are spiralling out of control … leaving families forced to delay treatment or even give up beloved pets. Owners deserve clear, honest pricing … not hidden costs and shocking surprises. Sign this petition to demand fair, transparent veterinary care for every pet and every family.

Veterinary care is not a luxury … it is essential to protect the health and welfare of the animals we love. Yet in recent years, UK pet owners have been facing eye-watering, inconsistent and often opaque vet bills. Families are being forced into heartbreaking choices … delay treatment, cut back on their own essentials, or even surrender or put down pets they cannot afford to treat.

This situation is unacceptable. Rising veterinary costs are not simply about inflation … they are compounded by a lack of price transparency and huge variations in charges for the same procedures.

Corporate consolidation is making things worse. In recent years, large corporate groups have bought up hundreds of once-independent vet practices across the UK. This reduces competition, drives up costs, and leaves owners with fewer choices. Many people don’t even realise their “local family vet” is now part of a big chain focused on profits, not pets.

We call on the government, DEFRA and the Competition & Markets Authority to act now:

Price transparency: Require every veterinary practice to publish clear, up-to-date price lists for common consultations and procedures.
Written estimates: Require vets to give written estimates before non-emergency treatments … so owners can make informed decisions.
Support low-cost options: Increase funding for community clinics and emergency support schemes … to ensure no animal is denied treatment due to cost.
Investigate profiteering: Expand the CMA review of the veterinary sector to address anti-competitive behaviour and excessive charges.
These simple measures would not harm good, caring vets who already charge fairly and communicate openly … But they would stop unscrupulous practices from exploiting pet owners, and restore trust in a profession that millions of families depend on.

Every pet deserves care when it needs it … Every owner deserves honesty and clarity about what that care will cost. We should not be forced into debt, despair or impossible choices just to keep our animals healthy.

Please sign this petition if you agree that veterinary pricing must be fair, transparent and accountable … Together we can push for change … and ensure that pets remain a source of joy, not financial distress.
