The Issue

Living in Tennessee, pet owners are legally required to vaccinate their pets against rabies to ensure the safety and health of both their pets and the community. However, the expenses associated with fulfilling this obligation can be overwhelming and unjust. Veterinary offices often charge exorbitant fees—sometimes upwards of $100—just for an examination before providing the legally mandated rabies vaccine. This makes it unaffordable for many pet owners to comply with the law, leading to potential fines and a class C misdemeanor for non-compliance.

Many humane societies and other commendable organizations strive to bridge this gap by offering rabies vaccinations for as low as $15. Yet, these low-cost facilities are not accessible to everyone, leaving countless pet owners across the state at a financial disadvantage when attempting to do what is legally required. This situation is neither fair nor sustainable.

We propose that all licensed veterinary clinics and doctors in Tennessee offer rabies vaccinations at an affordable base price, without requiring additional costs for visits or examinations. By making this change, we can alleviate the financial strain on pet owners while ensuring the health and safety of communities across the state.

Affordable access to rabies vaccinations is essential to uphold the law, protect our pets, and safeguard public health without placing undue burden on individuals. Please join us in urging policymakers and veterinary providers in Tennessee to make rabies vaccinations accessible and affordable for all by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of pet owners and their beloved animals.
