The Issue

My husband and I run a small hedgehog rescue in the UK, a mission close to our hearts. Hedgehogs are now on the red list, teetering on the brink of endangerment, and it's critical that we take swift action to save these beloved creatures. With only the generous donations from our kind-hearted followers to rely upon, we manage to keep our doors open. Yet, the financial burden of care is enormous.

Every time one of our rescues needs medical attention, we're faced with veterinary fees ranging from £50 to £80 just for the initial consultation. These costs do not include the essential medication required to nurse these animals back to health. These expenses add up quickly, and while we are committed to the welfare of hedgehogs, the costs sometimes feel insurmountable.

This is why I'm urging a change: to make veterinary care free for all wild animals. Wild animals like hedgehogs do not have owners to pay for their medical care, and the expense often falls on small rescue operations that are already stretched financially. It's not just about hedgehogs; countless other wild creatures often suffer in silence due to prohibitive vet fees.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) recently reported a concerning decline in UK wildlife populations, emphasizing the urgent need for increased conservation efforts. Similarly, a study by the Mammal Society identified that wildlife rescues and hospitals are pivotal in safeguarding struggling species. However, the financial barriers can impede our ability to act effectively.

One possible solution is to allocate a portion of government wildlife conservation funds to cover veterinary fees for wild animals. Implementing a nationwide scheme for free or subsidized wildlife care could significantly bolster conservation efforts.

We must act decisively to prevent further decline of our native species. Join us in seeking government support to remove these financial obstacles and secure a future for our precious wildlife. Please sign this petition to make veterinary fees free for all wild animals in the UK.
