I am a 100% disabled veteran, and I constantly struggle to secure the care and timely appointments that I desperately need under the current VA health system. It took me three agonizing years and four different doctors just to get a surgery consult. 

Our stories serve as stark reminders of the trials faced by many veterans seeking medical assistance through the VA. This needs to change on a systemic level, and one of the most impactful ways to ensure this might be by requiring all government and federal employees to use the VA health care system. Not only would this initiative provide firsthand experience of the process to those in positions of authority, but it could potentially streamline the improvement process for the VA healthcare system.

In redirecting the funds currently used for private health care for government and federal employees towards improving the VA health care system, we could enhance care for veterans dramatically. An estimated 9.3 million veterans are enrolled in the VA health care system [Congressional Research Service, 2016]. Imagine the impact we could have on their lives if those funds were efficiently utilized in the system that serves them.
