Make University of Toledo's Engineering & Nitschke Buildings Bird-Safe

The Issue

I have been monitoring buildings on the University of Toledo campus for bird window collisions for the past seven days. In one week, I have found 21 dead birds. Tragically, 16 of those died hitting windows on the North engineering and Nitchke buildings. This is a significant issue that needs immediate attention.

Bird-window collisions are a widespread problem that results in hundreds of millions of bird deaths each year in the U.S alone (according to American Bird Conservancy). The design and placement of windows can be lethal to birds, as they often reflect vegetation or appear transparent.

The University of Toledo has an opportunity to lead by example in making its campus more bird-friendly. By implementing bird-safe building designs such as installing patterned glass or external screens, we can significantly reduce these unnecessary fatalities.

This isn't just about protecting wildlife; it's about preserving our environment and taking responsibility for our impact on it. We urge the University administration to take immediate action towards making their Engineering & Nitchke buildings safer for birds.

Please sign this petition if you believe in creating a safer environment for our feathered friends at the University of Toledo.
