On 02/22/22 Elena Lucore was hit by a car speeding down Massachusetts Avenue. Elena was doing everything right. She was using the cross walk. UMass Amherst claims that "Police indicate the visibility was poor at the time due to weather conditions. The truth is this accident was preventable. UMass needs to install reflective paint and cross walk lights at all cross walks on campus that flash-indicating a pedestrian is crossing. We need raised cross walks and speed bumpings making it difficult for cars to speed. Students being hit by cars on campus is not a new issue for UMass with dozens of students being hit by cars since 2000. UMass failed Elena, and her parents deserve justice. Hold UMass accountable and make them make UMass a pedestrian friendly campus. Elena will always be remembered here at UMass and it is our responsibility to make sure this never happens again.
