Make U.S. 231 & Veterans Memorial Safer: End Flashing Yellow Left Turns

The Issue

Within the span of just 4 months , two riders, Ashley Ray and Tyler Guy have tragically lost their lives in motorcycle crashes at the intersection of U.S. 231 and Veterans Memorial Parkway in Lafayette, Indiana.

I’m asking the appropriate transportation officials to eliminate all flashing yellow left-turn signals at this intersection and replace them with protected green arrows that only allow drivers to turn when they have a green arrow and oncoming traffic has a red light.

I’m also requesting an evaluation of removing a portion of the median to significantly improve visibility for drivers and help prevent future crashes.

A flashing yellow arrow tells drivers they may turn after yielding to oncoming traffic. But when drivers misjudge a motorcycle’s speed or fail to see an approaching rider, the consequences are fatal. Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see, and riders have virtually no protection against a turning vehicle.

Motorcycle crashes at intersections are a serious safety concern. According to NHTSA data, Approximately 46% of fatal two-vehicle motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle turning left across an oncoming motorcycle’s path. Additionally, other drivers’ failure to yield or right-of-way violations occur in roughly 60–66% of multi-vehicle motorcycle accidents. These statistics highlight the importance of improving intersection visibility, left-turn signals, and driver awareness to help protect motorcyclists.

Removing a portion of the median could give turning drivers a clearer line of sight to oncoming motorcycles, making it easier to see approaching riders and judge their distance before turning.

We’ve now seen the devastating consequences of crashes at this same intersection. How many more lives have to be lost before something changes?

Waiting a few extra seconds for a protected turn is a small inconvenience compared to the permanent loss of a human life. No one should have to wonder whether they’ll make it home because another driver misjudged a turn.

I’m calling on the responsible transportation authorities to review this intersection and implement protected left-turn signals in place of flashing yellow yields. We need action before another family loses someone they love.
