We’re asking the U.S. Congress to designate tofu as America’s official national food. Yes, tofu. The bean has been preparing for this its entire life.
TOFU IS SOYBEANS. THIS IS FARM COUNTRY.
USDA reports that more than 80% of U.S. soybean acreage is in the Midwest. We’re talking Big Ten football country: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, and Nebraska. Those five states grew about 53% of U.S. soybeans in 2025—roughly 2.24 billion bushels, calculated from USDA’s production estimates.
Grain elevators. County fairs. Saturday football. Tofu has a more Midwestern résumé than its reputation suggests.
ILLINOIS ALREADY PUT IT IN WRITING.
The soybean is Illinois’s official state bean, effective January 1, 2026. This bean has legislation. It has acreage. It would like a promotion.
If a soybean can represent Illinois, tofu can make a pretty good case for representing America.
AMERICA GROWS TOFU.
American-grown soybeans can become tofu. The blocks don’t sprout in the field. The beans do the agricultural part.
Tofu’s deep roots in Chinese food history are part of the story. This campaign celebrates that heritage alongside American farmers and America’s talent for making room at the table.
Tofu provides plant protein; the amount varies by product and serving size. Check the label. Grill it. Fry it. Bring it to the tailgate. Give it barbecue sauce and a tiny flag.
Let’s give American soybean growers some applause and the soybean’s most rectangular career move some national recognition.
This is a symbolic citizen petition. Signing shows support; it does not change the law or guarantee government action. We welcome a congressional resolution as a first step, while a designation in federal law would require enacted legislation.
