Make the unlawful killing of pets a distinct offence in Ireland

The Issue

My beloved cat, Harley, was brutally murdered in our own front garden. While I was away, two men deliberately set their lurcher dog on him, under command, as they stood at the bottom of our driveway. The pain, anger, and helplessness that followed is indescribable and yet, under Irish law, Harley's unimaginable suffering and loss is reduced to mere property damage. This realization is not just heartbreaking for pet owners but also for anyone who understands the deep emotional bond between animals and humans.

Currently, the unlawful killing of pets is categorized under property damage in Ireland, failing to acknowledge the sentience and emotional value of animals. This legal gap fails to provide sufficient justice to the heartbroken families left behind. It's time for Irish law to evolve, recognizing animals as sentient beings and providing them with the protection they deserve.

We call upon the Irish government to establish a distinct offence for the unlawful killing of pets, similar to murder, to ensure perpetrators are adequately punished, reflecting the heinous nature of the act. This change in legislation will not only serve justice to affected families but will also serve as a deterrent to future offenders, highlighting the serious consequences of such cruel actions.

In other countries, like the UK, laws like "Finn’s Law," named in honour of a police dog seriously injured by an assailant, have successfully increased penalties for those who harm animals, acknowledging their role as sentient beings. Ireland must follow suit, setting a precedent for animal welfare and rights, and recognizing the intrinsic value of animals beyond mere property.

Our pets are family, loved and cherished. They are more than just possessions. Harley’s tragic death should not be in vain. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a change that seeks justice for all pets and their owners, ensuring a safer and more compassionate society. Let us not wait for another tragedy to prompt change.

Stand with us. Sign this petition to urge the Irish government to make the unlawful killing of pets a distinct offence. Together, we can make a difference, ensuring our beloved animals receive the respect and protection they need.
