"The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" is a novel by the talented author, Avi, which was first published back in 1990. It follows a prim and proper Victorian 13-year-old girl named Charlotte Doyle who sails alone from England to Rhode Island in 1832 aboard a merchant ship called the Seahawk, where she gets caught in a dangerous power struggle between the tyrannical captain Jaggery and a rebellious crew. During the story, she transforms from a prim and proper girl into a brave and swashbuckling sailor with the crew. It has recently captured my imagination and admiration. I absolutely loved the book! It's now one of my favorite novels ever! This was a true page turner! I actually had a hard time putting down the book since it was so good! The narrative is not just exhilarating but also deeply insightful, with its richly drawn characters and gripping storyline. Having devoured this book eagerly, I've recently heard that a major theatrical live action feature film adaptation was once announced back in July 2008 and in the works. Helmed by acclaimed director Danny DeVito who also wrote the script, this adaptation boasted an incredible lineup, featuring stars like Morgan Freeman as Zachariah, Pierce Brosnan as Captain Jaggery, and either Saoirse Ronan or Dakota Fanning as Charlotte Doyle. Backed by HandMade Films, this project promised a cinematic experience that fans across the globe could cherish. Unfortunately, due to untimely events, including an unfortunate accident involving Morgan Freeman in 2008 which happened before filming even began, this project fell through and was eventually shelved indefinitely in the early 2010s, much to the disappointment of many fans including myself. The cancellation of such a promising venture is nothing short of a letdown for admirers of this literary work. From what I heard on Avi's website, none of his books were adapted yet. I heard Charlotte Doyle was the one that got closest to being made into a movie! They even have a movie poster on the website as well! In one blog titled "Movie Option," the author himself said that he would love to see it get adapted but at the same time, thinks it's unlikely to happen. Another thing that bothers me is that he said he might prefer an adaptation of this other book he wrote called "City of Orphans." While I'm sure it's a good book (even though I haven't actually read it yet) I still think "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" should be the first one to get adapted especially since they got so close to making it happen like I said before! However in this more recent blog titled "Everything Charlotte Doyle," fans are still asking about a movie adaptation and it seems the chances are a little more hopeful and likely than before. Also, Morgan Freeman has recovered a while ago and is back in the movie industry, so maybe Danny Devito can still revive his cancelled project hopefully. But a reboot might seem more likely in some ways.
