Make the Sex Offenders Registry Publicly Accessible
The Issue
My sister and I experienced the horror and deep violation of being victims of a child sex offender, a man whose past was marred by a previous caution and convictions for child sexual offences. He was recently sentenced to four years in prison. Disturbingly, he was able to run his own business that allowed him direct access to children without a DBS check, a fact we were devastatingly unaware of.
The current system shields vital information, as the sex offenders register is inaccessible to the public. This lack of transparency means families, schools, and communities can be unaware of potential dangers lurking in their midst. Parents like us can unknowingly put their children in harm's way due to the lack of public access to this critical information.
It is time to demand change. By making the sex offenders register publicly accessible, we would empower communities to protect their children and be more informed about who they are interacting with in daily life. Numerous countries, including the United States, have Megan's Law allowing public access to such registers, and this transparency has proven vital in enhancing community safety.
There is a clear and urgent need for legislative reform to allow public access to the sex offenders register in the UK. Such a reform would involve appropriate measures to protect individuals' rights while ensuring that communities are informed and safe. The safety and well-being of our children should be prioritized above all else.
Please help us bring about this change by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for transparency and safety, ensuring our communities have the necessary tools to protect our children from predators. Your signature is a step towards a safer, more informed community for everyone.
