Make the Royal Park Oval an off leash dog area

The issue

In Lonnie we cherish our community's close-knit nature. However, there's an increasing need for accessible recreational spaces for our residents, particularly for older adults and their four- legged companions.

Currently, many residents face obstacles in enjoying designated off-leash dog areas due to their remote and inaccessible locations. Statistics show that 45% of Point Lonsdale's population is aged 65 or older and this demographic deserves better options.

At present, it is understood that the potential designated off-leash area at the Lighthouse is not only too far for many residents, but also plagued by parking and traffic issues and a dilapidated, unmarked road; for those who can still drive.

These barriers make it difficult to enjoy the benefits of animal companionship and daily exercise.

Royal Park Oval (near the Springs), on the other hand, offers a prime location that is more accessible to the majority of Point Lonsdale's residents.

Turning Royal Park Oval into an off-leash dog area would mean more than just a new space for pets to roam freely. It would provide a hub for community interaction and socialization, strengthen neighbourhood ties and offer health benefits to both dogs and people through regular physical activity.

We can ensure harmony by setting designated times for games and training sessions when pets would need to be leashed, accommodating everyone’s needs.

Making Royal Park Oval an off-leash area is a logical and inclusive step forward for our community. It will validate the needs of our older population while enriching the environment for all.

Despite hundreds of people advocating alternatives for the Boroughs proposed off-leash trial areas, including Royal Park Oval (26 direct comments), in the recent survey, the Borough of Queenscliffe has ignored entreaties which have fallen on deaf ears.

Help us show the local Borough the value of this initiative by signing this petition. Let's take this necessary step towards a more connected and pet-friendly Point Lonsdale.
