We continue to work hard to support the planning commission in researching, exploring, and bringing forward proposals about affordable options in Prairie Village, which would allow for a greater diversity of residents. The other side, meanwhile, has posted a statement that plainly opposes replacing a single-family home with "smaller dwelling units instead" saying this would affect the "character of the neighborhood" and the ability of neighbors to protest when homeowners decide to make changes to their own land and home. In other words, they would prefer a single home be replaced with another single home, which means more and more expensive housing.
They note that the process in place has "worked well" for decades, but the process in place is pricing people out of Prairie Village and disallowing racial, socioeconomic, and other types of diversity here. While they say they support property owner rights, they want to preserve the rights of neighbors to interfere with a homeowner's decision about their own homes and land through protest petitions.
