Make the pedestrian crossing at Cowper Street and Colquitz Avenue safer for pedestrians.
Make the pedestrian crossing at Cowper Street and Colquitz Avenue safer for pedestrians.
The Issue
We are asking the District of Saanich to review and improve pedestrian safety at the crossing of Cowper Street and Colquitz Avenue.
Over the years, traffic through this area has increased, and many drivers appear to use these streets as a shortcut. Residents and pedestrians regularly have to deal with vehicles approaching the crossing without slowing sufficiently or yielding to people crossing.
Recently, I was crossing with my baby and my dog when a vehicle came extremely close to hitting us and had to slam on its brakes. There have been many times I have personally experienced a near-miss at this crossing or have witnessed .
I am asking Saanich Engineering to conduct a safety assessment of this crossing and consider appropriate improvements, such as:
• A pedestrian-activated flashing beacon
• Improved pedestrian crossing signage and visibility
• Additional lighting
• A pedestrian signal
We are not asking Saanich to install one particular solution without assessment. We are asking the District to investigate the safety concerns at this crossing and determine what improvements are appropriate.
Pedestrians, families, children, cyclists and people walking their dogs and cats use this crossing. I believe proactive improvements can help reduce the risk of a serious collision.
