Moving to Melrose was a dream, offering a chance to enjoy outdoor activities and the beautiful expanses of the Middlesex Fells Reservation. For my wife and I, it's become part and parcel of our daily life, offering a sanctuary and a spot for our sweet rescue dog to frolic and enjoy nature. But as our friends and fellow residents will attest, accessing this gem poses unnecessary risks. Crossing certain streets to access the Fells feels like playing a dangerous game of chance every time.

The issue boils down to pedestrian safety in two specific locations connecting our community to the Fells.

The first is Washington Street at Goodyear Avenue (42.443816, -71.072964), the primary walking route from the Oak Grove neighborhood to the Goodyear Avenue entrance to the Fells. There is no sidewalk along the final stretch, drivers routinely travel 40 mph in a 25 mph zone, and almost no one stops for pedestrians. It is dangerous every single day.

The second is Fellsway East at the Cross Fells Trail (42.442112, -71.079211), an official DCR-designated access point where hikers must cross Fellsway East to reach the Woodland Path and Observatory Rock Circuit Trail. There is no marked crosswalk, and drivers regularly speed past pedestrians with no regard for their safety.

We are calling on the City of Melrose, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and our state legislators to act swiftly by incorporating pedestrian safety measures at both of these locations. These improvements will ensure our streets reflect the value we place on community health and safety, prevent accidents, and promote accessible green spaces for all.

Improving these crosswalks means safeguarding the joy of living in such a vibrant community.
