Make the main road through Tunnel Hill in Upton-upon-Severn 30mph
The Issue
The A4104/Welland Road stretch of road, connecting Upton-upon-Severn through Tunnel Hill to Wheatley Lane ought to serve as a safe passage for pedestrians. However, with its current speed limit set at 40mph and pavement on only one side, the risk to pedestrian safety is intolerable.
For those of us walking this route—especially parents with young children in pushchairs or those requiring a bit more space for mobility—the narrow pavement forces us dangerously close to speeding traffic. People frequently have to step out into the road to avoid obstacles or to accommodate a pushchair, and with the current road speed this is particularly anxiety-inducing. As the primary pathway to essential amenities and the local school, it is crucial for this road to be safer for everyone.
With new houses increasing the number of residents, continuing to have a 40mph speed limit is out of step with the current needs. By adjusting the speed limit to 30mph, vehicles will naturally slow down as they ascend the hill, ensuring a safer environment as they approach the Hill Centre. This change is simple yet impactful, enhancing safety and well-being for all pedestrians. Active transport, such as cycling and walking, are being actively encouraged by the local authority, but unless the roads are safe for us to use, people will continue to opt for cars.
As an urban road with street lights, it is highly unusual that this road remains at 40mph, and I know that the local authority have previously ignored calls from councillors and the town council to change this, but if we can show the local residents support this call for change, we can improve the chance for this to happen. The plan is to present this petition to the council in June 2026.
The safety of our residents must be prioritized, and a lower speed limit is an actionable step towards a safer community. Join us in petitioning the local council to reduce the speed limit on A4104/Welland Road to 30mph all the way from the centre of Upton-upon-Severn to Wheatley Lane. Your signature can help make this vital safety improvement a reality. Please sign this petition and make Tunnel Hill a safer place for pedestrians.
