Make the Last Day of School a Half Day for NYC Students
The Issue
As a dedicated teacher in the New York City school system, I've experienced firsthand the challenges that come with the current schedule for the last day of school. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, students had a half day, allowing teachers the necessary time to prepare their classrooms for the summer break. Now, with a full day on the last schedule, it has become increasingly difficult for educators to complete end-of-year tasks efficiently.
Teachers are faced with the enormous task of cleaning up their classrooms, packing away materials, and often moving to different classrooms for the following school year. Having students present for a full day makes this logistical process much more difficult, as there are limited opportunities to pack and organize without disrupting the learning environment. A half-day schedule also helps maintain student engagement on a day traditionally characterized by excitement and an eagerness for summer vacation.
Furthermore, transitioning back to a half-day schedule on the last day aligns with standard practices in various other districts across the country. According to a 2019 report by the Niche education platform, numerous districts in New York state and beyond have adhered to this practice for years, understanding the mutual benefits for educators and students alike.
Bringing back a half day would not only support teachers in their vital end-of-year preparations but also contribute to a smoother transition for students into their summer break. They could enjoy an early release, which alleviates transport and childcare arrangements for many families and aligns with the spirit of the occasion.
Join me in advocating for a more sensible last day of school schedule for New York City students and teachers. By signing this petition, you support restoring a tradition that benefits all parties involved, ensuring a thoughtful conclusion to the school year that respects both educational and logistical needs. Let's encourage the NYC Department of Education to prioritize the well-being of its teachers and students by making this simple yet impactful change. Please sign and share this petition to help return to a half-day last day of school in NYC!
