Make The Garden District Great Again!

Alexandria contains the largest in-tact Garden District north of New Orleans.  It was once a beautiful and thriving neighborhood with a grocery store, neighbors and families.  Every house has a story.  It is hidden gem, but has fallen off due to the loss of single family residents.

Absentee landlords are the problem.  They contribute to blight that negatively affects property values and fosters dangerous neighborhoods.  They neglect their properties, rent to criminals, and choose to live elsewhere.

The house located on 21st Street between Jackson Street and Marye Street used to be owned by a prominent family.  A double murder was committed in the house over a year ago.  The landlord never bothered to clean up the crime scene. It now sits vacant and harbors vagrants.

Our goal is to put families back into these dilapidated properties and to restore the Garden District to its former glory.  It starts by reducing the number of rentals, especially multi-family complexes.

The property at issue sits between a house owned by a nice family with children and another house that rents a garage to suspected drug users.  Adding a 4-plex to the equation will tip the scales in the wrong direction.

Allowing apartment complexes in neighborhoods zoned ONLY for single families is a step backward.  The Garden District was conceived as a neighborhood for families.  There is a concerted movement to restoring ownership back to the Garden District.  Slowly but surely the movement is working to restore the former integrity of the Garden District.  Help us put neighbors back in our neighborhood!
