Make the Department of Health send a warning notice to citizens in the event of an epidemic in their area! Kaliah's Law
The Issue
The current policy is to only tell healthcare providers, not citizens, in the event of an epidemic, which, if you think about it doesn't make sense, since it is the doctors telling them about the epidemic in the first place. When did it become the duty of the doctors to share epidemic information? Shouldn't this be the responsibility of our Department of Health and the CDC? The motto of our Department of Health here in Washington is. ”Public Health - Always working for a Safer and Healthier Washington.” They waited too long to say anything, and when they did, it had spread too far. The epidemic started the first week in January and they did not announce it until April 3rd. Four months and now we have the worst epidemic in over 70 years with approximately 27,000 cases as the reported cases only represent 10% of actual. Make them tell us next time- as soon as the epidemic threshold is reached, so it can be stopped before it gets out of control. You should be warned so you can chose to stay out of populated areas, or be informed where to get more information if you wish. This is about being informed and protected from a known, potentially, lethal threat to you and your community.
Our goal is to have legislation written in January 2013, which would require that the Department of Health must send an “Official Public Health Warning Notice” to all Households, Businesses, and PO Boxes in the area, warning citizens of the epidemic, so they may react accordingly.
We begin our drive on Kaliahs Birthday, July 20, and continue until the day she died on August 16.
We need to show them we are serious, and want to know if there is an epidemic in our area! We need signatures, calls, emails, and Facebook posts on your local Legislators page. We can do this nationally and end Pertussis and other communicable diseases forever, as well as save more lives in the event of an epidemic anytime, anywhere.
Why should Washington State be the only state where they warn the public when there is an epidemic in their community? Let do this in every state! 27 days to get as much attention nationally- July 20th to August 16th! Kaliah’s Law will save lives!
