At present the law requires a person to report a road traffic collision, whereby the vehicle has come into contact with a dog, to the police pursuant to The Road Traffic Act 1988. However, the law does not currently contain any provisions, in which the driver is held liable for the injury or death of the dog.  

With over 12 million dogs kept as pets in the UK and most categorizing their beloved animal/s as family, rather than a pet, this potential loss is heartbreaking for owners. 

The purpose of this petition is to place the onus on to the driver and ensure they take accountability for the incident. This petition will call for a change in the law to ensure that causing injury/death to a dog is a criminal offence and update the Road Traffic Act 1988, to reflect this. This is turn will hopefully make road users more considerate towards animals and hold careless drivers accountable for their actions.
