The Issue

My mother and I both suffer from neuropathy, affecting our feet and overall mobility. Anticipating a time when she can no longer drive, a tandem mobility scooter offers a safe and practical solution for us to maintain our independence. Unfortunately, current regulations do not allow tandem mobility scooters on public paths. This restriction means that we, along with countless others facing similar challenges, are forced to choose either isolation or unnecessary inconvenience by limiting our choices to single-passenger scooters.

The laws prohibiting tandem scooters are outdated. They do not reflect the needs of modern users who require transportation alongside a spouse, carer, or friend. Tandem scooters are just as safe as single ones, being longer but not wider, thus posing no additional hazard on public pathways. Yet, their illegality discriminates against those who need them the most – the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and those requiring assistance from a companion.

With an aging population, it is more important than ever to adapt our transportation laws to ensure inclusivity. Older individuals already face isolation when they lose spouses, and children with families often find it difficult to provide constant companionship. A tandem scooter could bridge this gap, granting a lifeline to the elderly and disabled, enabling them to lead more fulfilling lives.

Statistics show that social isolation and loneliness among older adults can significantly impact mental health and overall well-being. By legalizing tandem mobility scooters, we can directly combat this issue by providing an easy, cost-effective way to foster community involvement and personal interaction.

We urge lawmakers to reconsider and update the regulations governing mobility scooters to include tandem models. It's time to provide equal opportunities for all, ensuring that those who need additional support or companionship are not unfairly hindered by outdated laws.
