“It is the duty of each one of us, to ensure that the quest for material prosperity does not compromise our environment […] Let us all join together to beat plastic pollution and make this planet a better place to live.”
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on World Environment Day (June 5, 2018), when India pledged to eliminate all single-use plastics by 2022.
Picture this – you’re staying at a luxury hotel in the mountains or by the sea, soaking in royal indulgences...
Suddenly, the visual changes. Instead of idyllic green hills and emerald seas you now see mountains and seas of plastic waste: plastic shampoo and lotion bottles in hotel bathrooms, plastic water bottles in guest rooms and at conference/banquet venues...
And you realize how the hotel industry has recklessly sacrificed the environment in return for some imagined convenience or luxury for you, their guests. BUT…Why should a luxury hotel stay mean generating a mountain of disposable plastic water bottles? Why should hosting a conference or wedding mean generating a sea of disposable plastic water bottles?
The plastic bottle of water is something that is actually not a necessity, but an unnecessary indulgence! Did you know that…
- As a species, we consume one million plastic bottles every minute.
- The $50 billion dollar bottled water market is built on an illusion that bottled water is safer than regular filtered water – but actually, it is not!
- 1 million sea birds and 1,00,000 marine mammals are killed each year by ocean plastic waste.
- It actually takes 3 litres of water to make 1 litre of bottled water.
India’s luxury hotel industry is a small but significant contributor to this problem – but it can also become the pioneer in solving it! It’s largest hotel chain, the Taj Group of Hotels (Indian Hotels Company or IHCL), with its 15000 rooms in over 100 hotels can make a huge difference by taking a strong and timely stand against single-use plastic.
Help me bring attention to a simple step that the Taj Group can take, to lead the way boldly towards a plastic free future. SIGN THIS PETITION to convince the Taj Group of Hotels (IHCL) to replace all single-use plastic bottles of water with reusable glass bottles and water stations serving RO/filtered water before Earth Day 2019! #BeatPlasticPollution #GreenUpTaj #WeWillRefill
In fact, I am requesting the Taj Group to step up, because they have already launched steps in the right direction such as the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa in the Andamans being India’s India’s first Zero Single-Use Plastic Hotel!
I believe they can do more! Help me help India’s pride – the Taj Group of Hotels – become the top brand in sustainability and lead the way towards experiencing luxury untainted by the guilt of plastic use.

This is the time to take strong and positive action – the UN has resolved this year to #BeatPlasticPollution. In India, on World Environment Day, Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan vowed to eliminate all single-use plastics by 2022 – the 75th year of India’s independence. Around the world, luxury hotel chains are taking up the cause of finding alternatives to plastic. Marriott, St. Regis, Hilton, the ITC chain, Hyatt Regency and others are replacing plastic with cloth, paper, cardboard, glass or plant-based alternatives.
Sign this petition to convince Taj Hotels to make a public commitment to replace all single-use plastic bottles of water with reusable bottles and water stations serving RO/filtered water before Earth Day 2019!
