PETITION UPDATE – SHELTON NEW ROAD & SURROUNDING AREA

Thank you to everyone who has signed and supported the petition. We now have 294 signatures, and following our meeting with Highways on 27 August, site visits and further correspondence, we have received an update on some of the issues raised.

There is still work to do, but some short-term measures are now progressing:

• Temporary cycle-lane measures/bollards have been ordered. Highways advised there was a 3–4 week lead time from their latest update.

• Road and cycle-lane markings – a drawing is being prepared and sent to the lining contractor for pricing. This includes the work being considered around the yellow-box markings at the Brick Kiln Lane/Robert Knox Way junction. Highways indicated that the timescale is likely to be similar to the temporary measures, although a confirmed works date has not yet been provided.

• Following the 19 September cycle-lane incident at the North Street approach, Highways has confirmed that temporary measures will be applied to this section. We are waiting for confirmation of exactly what these measures will consist of and when they will be installed.

• Parking and pavement obstruction measures are being progressed separately through the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process, with consultation expected in October 2026. We are seeking confirmation of the exact locations and restrictions proposed, including the concerns raised around Philip Clarke Drive.

These are the shorter-term measures. Highways has also indicated that a larger main scheme is likely from January 2027 onwards, covering a number of the wider issues raised, including the North Street junction/cycle-lane approach, school-safety considerations, footways, drainage and signage. This is currently an indicative programme, rather than a confirmed construction start date.

An alternative SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) solution is also being considered for the drainage issues. No design or location has yet been confirmed.

Some important issues remain outstanding. In particular, we have asked separately for a response regarding speeding on Shelton New Road and concerns about red-light running, including at the Brick Kiln Lane/Robert Knox Way junction. A further request for information was sent on 24 September.

We will therefore keep the petition open and continue updating it as measures are confirmed, consultations take place and works are delivered.

Thank you again to everyone who has signed, shared photographs, reported incidents and raised concerns. Every update will continue to distinguish between what is being considered, agreed, scheduled and actually completed.
