The Issue

On September 11, 2001, a day that had begun like any other, America was changed forever. The brutal terrorist attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives left an indelible mark on the hearts of millions who witnessed or learned about these tragic events. I fear that, as the years continue to pass, we are at risk of allowing these memories to fade and these lessons to be forgotten. This is why I passionately advocate for making September 11th a federal holiday—a day dedicated not only to remembrance but also to unity, resilience, and education.

September 11th was a day of unprecedented loss, but it also became a day of unprecedented heroism. Firefighters, police officers, medical professionals, and everyday citizens alike risked and, in many instances, gave their lives to save others. A federal holiday would honor these heroes, ensuring their sacrifices are recognized from generation to generation.

Furthermore, by institutionalizing a day of remembrance, we can foster national unity and provide space for reflection and education. Many educational initiatives can be built around this day, such as school programs focused on the importance of empathy, global awareness, and the impact of hatred and violence. This day would serve as a poignant reminder to each American of our shared vulnerability and our shared strength.

In 2009, the U.S. Congress designated September 11th as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging acts of kindness and community support in honor of the victims and responders. While this is a step in the right direction, making it a federal holiday would ensure broader participation from schools, businesses, and government agencies, akin to how we honor Veterans Day or Memorial Day.

Existing holidays such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day serve to remind us of our history and the costs of freedom. Incorporating September 11th into this national remembrance canon would emphasize our commitment to remembering all who have suffered in the name of our nation and ideals.

I urge you to join this initiative to honor, reflect, and educate. Designating September 11th as a federal holiday would be a powerful tool in preserving the memory of that fateful day and the lessons we learned. Sign this petition to spark change, honor the memory of those who were lost, and inspire a future built on compassion and unity.
