FEATURE: Health in Focus - Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR) Opposes Blue Angels Flying at Seafair
“Climate change is the most significant threat to human health in the 21st century.” So said the prestigious medical journal The Lancet in 2023. The quote is the lead sentence in a Senate Resolution introduced by OR Senator Markey. Scientists overwhelmingly agree. Burning fossil fuel produces tiny particles (PM 2.5) that enter our lungs but cannot be expelled. They worsen heart and lung disease, raise the risk of cancer and pregnancy complications such as miscarriage and premature birth, and even travel in the bloodstream to the brain, raising risk for dementia. Those who live or work near transport corridors such as freeways or airports are at highest risk, breathing polluted air they cannot escape. Their lifespans are 2-5 years shorter as a result.
And jet noise is loud! Human hearing ranges from a whisper to a roar, by a delicate system of ‘hair cells’ that bend in the ‘wind’ caused by sounds. But these cells are very sensitive to sudden or prolonged loud noise that can kill the cells by blowing them over, just like trees blasted by Mt St Helens volcanic eruption. Kids and animals are more sensitive so need more protection.
Finally, combat veterans and war refugees may be triggered by sights, sounds or smells of jets roaring overhead, if they were exposed to similar inescapable attacks during warfare.
WPSR formed decades ago to oppose nuclear weapons, recently expanded to include the health effects of climate change. We don’t know any doctors who think nuclear war is a great idea, and we know breathing jet fumes is bad for health. WPSR opposes Blue Angels flying at Seafair because of climate and health harms to residents and ask you to join us!
“The noise is very distracting and triggering for patients at the hospital I work in.”
