Make Schools Safer: Install Additional Barriers or Fencing At Elementaries in Irvine, CA

Help Us Protect Our Children!

We, the concerned parents and community members of Irvine, California, are advocating for the installation of additional fencing or barriers at elementary schools in the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD), particularly those with special education programs.

My son is enrolled in the Autism Specific Program and has a 1:1 aide. Unfortunately, he has experienced two distressing incidents where he was lost for over 30 minutes during school hours—once on December 14, 2023, and again on August 29, 2024.  Both times was with a different aide. These alarming experiences prompted me to reach out to other families, and I learned that I am not alone; several parents and neighbors have shared similar concerns. Some reported that their child left the campus, while others encountered children other than my son who had wandered off. One neighbor even mentioned that a child rang their doorbell after leaving the school.

These incidents raise serious concerns about the safety of our children, especially in schools that lack proper fencing. Many elementary schools in our district are not enclosed by a fence, putting our most vulnerable students at risk. We believe that installing additional fencing or barriers at these schools is a necessary step to ensure the safety and security of all students, providing a safe environment for learning and growth.

We are asking for:

  • The installation of additional fences or barriers at the elementary schools in IUSD.
  • Priority attention for schools with special education programs, starting with Cypress Village Elementary.

Our children deserve to learn and play in a safe environment. Please join us in advocating for their safety by signing this petition!
