Make schools safer from active shooter situations in Lincoln County
The Issue
Every morning, as I drop my children off at school, I'm struck by a gnawing fear: Will this be the last goodbye? As a parent in Lincoln County, Oregon, I believe our schools should be sanctuaries of learning and safety—akin to the warmth and security of our own homes. And yet, the recurring headlines about school shootings nationwide haunt us with the unsettling reality that our children are not always safe.
We cannot afford complacency. The absence of robust safety measures leaves our schools vulnerable to unimaginable tragedies. According to data from the K-12 School Shooting Database, there have been over 300 incidents involving a firearm on school grounds since 2013 in the United States alone. This alarming statistic is a call to action that we must not ignore.
In Lincoln County, we urgently need enhanced security protocols to ensure our children can learn without fear. I understand that our school district already has incredible safety measures in place for situations like this, but the fierce motherly instinct within me always feels there is no end to making sure our babies are as safe as possible when not in our care.
This could include installing advanced security systems, such as surveillance cameras and secure entry points, and increasing the presence of trained security personnel not just at high and middle schools. Clearly, the elementary schools as well. Conducting regular active shooter drills in partnership with local law enforcement more than 2 times in an academic year.
What about implementing an online form that must be completed using the email registered with the school before entering the building? If you plan to enter the school, you must fill out the online form to obtain some form of a safe word and/or code. When you ring yourself in at the door, the staff would ask for the word or code before unlocking the doors.
What about metal detectors? Automatic locking of classroom doors as soon as the Blue Box Warning System is triggered? Shatterproof glass? Highly enforced security fencing?
People will probably laugh at my suggestions and bring up the cost of it all, but AT WHAT COST do we make sure our babies return home to us every day? There should be NO price tag on our children's safety. They deserve to go to school and return home to their families, and we, as parents, deserve to drop them off at school without worrying if it was our last goodbye.
Parents, educators, and community members must come together to advocate for these critical changes. Join me in urging the Lincoln County School District and local government officials to prioritize school safety measures. The future of our children depends on the actions we take today.
Sign this petition to bring about the change our community so desperately needs. Let us ensure that dropping off our children at school is never an act of anxiety, but one of confidence and trust in their safety.
