I speak as a transgender teenager who directly faces the struggles instigated by insufficient safety measures in school. My identity constantly places me in a vulnerable position; every school day is marked with worry and panic attacks due to the fear of my rights being infringed upon.

It is imperative to stress how crucial security is for transgender and non-binary individuals like me. A 2019 study by the National Center for Transgender Equality reports that over half of transgender and non-binary individuals have experienced some form of discrimination in schools. This problem is national, but it is also unignorably local.

Public schools need to serve as a safe environment for all students, regardless of their gender identity or expression. We require more comprehensive policies which recognise, protect, and uphold the rights of transgender and non-binary students. This should include safety procedures, sensitivity and awareness trainings for staff and students, respectful acknowledgement of chosen names and pronouns, and access to appropriate facilities.

It is time for public schools to prioritize the safety and dignity of transgender and non-binary students. We deserve respect, security, and equal opportunity in our schools.
