As a parent of a young family, I love spending time outdoors and believe everyone should be able to enjoy Scarborough Beach in a healthy, clean and welcoming environment.

Scarborough Beach is a place where people come to run, walk, swim, skate, play basketball and enjoy the playgrounds with their children. It is a place that encourages an active, healthy lifestyle, yet visitors can still be exposed to second-hand smoke and vape aerosols while enjoying these shared spaces.

I am calling on the City of Stirling to introduce designated smoke and vape-free areas at Scarborough Beach to better protect the health and wellbeing of our community.

The City of Vincent has already taken positive steps by introducing smoke and vape-free areas in Leederville, Mount Hawthorn, Mount Lawley/Highgate, North Perth and Northbridge. These initiatives demonstrate how local councils can help create healthier public spaces.

According to the City of Vincent, creating smoke and vape-free town centres can benefit the entire community, including:

• Protecting the community from passive smoking and vaping.
• Improving the health and wellbeing of the community.
• Reducing litter from cigarette butts, cigarette packets and vape cartridges.
• Providing positive role modelling for young people.
• Heightening awareness of the health risks of smoking and second-hand smoke, vaping and second-hand aerosol.
• Providing enhanced support for community members to cut down or quit.
• Reducing fire risks.
• Our beaches and public spaces should be places where families can enjoy the outdoors without unnecessary exposure to smoke.

Please sign this petition and encourage the City of Stirling to follow the City of Vincent's lead. Even if you don't live near Scarborough Beach, your support could help pave the way for healthier public spaces everywhere.

Let's make a positive change for our families, our community and future generations.
