The Issue

With Labour's plans to relax planning laws allowing new planning applications within a 1-mile radius of travel hubs, such as bus or rail stations, to be more easily approved, our community is poised for growth. This anticipated expansion means an influx of young working families who may rely heavily on public transportation for commuting to nearby towns and cities including Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham, and even London. In light of this, it is crucial that we enhance accessibility at our local train station.

Sandbach Station, as it stands, is not fully accessible to everyone. This lack of step-free access prevents numerous passengers, including those with mobility issues, parents with strollers, and elderly community members, from using the trains comfortably and safely. Installing lifts to all platforms at Sandbach Station would significantly improve accessibility, align with inclusivity values, and better serve the growing needs of our community.

In 2019, it was reported that nearly 1 in 5 people in the UK were living with a disability. Public transport should be inclusive and accessible to everyone. The Equality Act 2010 mandates reasonable adjustments be made to avoid putting individuals with disabilities at a disadvantage. Sandbach Station's current status falls short of this requirement.

Moreover, the benefits of these improvements extend beyond meeting statutory obligations. Enhanced access to public transit contributes positively to the local economy and environment by reducing the reliance on personal vehicles. It also encourages sustainable growth, making our area more appealing to new residents and businesses alike.

Let's move towards greater inclusivity by ensuring Sandbach Station is equipped with lifts for step-free access across all platforms. Join us in calling on Network Rail to prioritize this vital enhancement to our station infrastructure. By signing this petition, you are supporting the creation of a more inclusive, accessible, and thriving Sandbach community for everyone.
