The Issue

For years now, I've had the privilege and responsibility of serving as a service manager at a business located along the bustling stretch of New York State Route 5 near the intersection of French Road. Daily, I witness the vibrant yet chaotic life this artery supports, and it's with a heavy heart that I am reminded of its more perilous side: numerous accidents, some of which have tragically claimed lives.

This intersection has long been a site of deadly traffic incidents, creating an urgent need for action. The lack of a traffic light at the corner of French Road and Route 5, coupled with the absence of sidewalks, poses significant risks to both pedestrians and drivers. These dangers not only endanger lives but also disrupt the peace and safety of our community, impacting businesses and residents alike.

Based on regional traffic reports, intersections without proper control measures see significantly higher accident rates. A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that installing traffic lights can reduce the risk of collisions by up to 50%. Furthermore, the introduction of sidewalks has been shown to dramatically increase pedestrian safety, lowering pedestrian collisions by as much as 88% according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Our community deserves safer streets that accommodate both vehicular and pedestrian traffic harmoniously. I propose the installation of a traffic light at the corner of French Road and Route 5, along with the construction of sidewalks. These measures are not merely conveniences; they are necessities to enhance safety and foster a more walkable, accessible environment for all.

Authorities have an obligation to safeguard the well-being of their constituents. With proper infrastructure, we can significantly reduce the odds of future tragic accidents, and provide a safe passage for pedestrians, fostering a more connected and thriving community.

Join me in calling upon our local government and traffic authorities to take immediate action. Sign this petition to support the installation of a traffic light and sidewalks on Route 5 at French Road, and let's work together towards a safer future for everyone who travels through or lives near this critical intersection. Your signature can help make our roads safer for everyone.
