In March this year, I contacted the New South Wales Premier, Chris Minns, about this petition.  I have received a response which shows some willingness to improve the plight of animals used and abused in rodeos.

The response said:

The NSW Government is continuing to consider feedback provided on rodeos and options for ensuring the currency of the NSW Code of Practice for Animals Used in Rodeo Events as part of its broader animal welfare work program.  Your feedback and petition will be considered as part of this work.

I intend to keep this petition going until we see meaningful changes to the rules around rodeos.  And your voice will help bring about those changes, so please share the petition, and also take a few moments to let Chris Minns know directly what you think about rodeos.

Here are some points you can call to the Premier's attention:

  • Rodeos need a special exemption from animal cruelty laws just to operate.
  • They are covered by a 38-year-old Code of Practice which has NEVER been updated.
  • They effectively have no scrutiny by regulators.
  • They are not required to have a vet present at events.
  • They are not required to report deaths and injuries of animals.
  • They use tight flank straps, spurs and electric prods to force peaceful herd animals to react.

The NSW Premier needs to hear from individuals that this animal abuse is not acceptable in today's society.  You can contact him here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/nsw-government/premier-of-nsw/contact-premier

Thank you for your support, and please continue to help me keep pushing for long-overdue changes to this cruel industry.

And thanks to Animal Liberation for the photo above, showing a terrified calf which, instead of being in a paddock with his mother, is being chased and roped by pretend cowboys for human entertainment.
