Hey Everyone, I met with the Chief Driving examiner Mark Winn and his team last week to discuss the best way possible in continuing to get the message out there on how to keep people safe on the road and help prevent injuries or fatalities . Essentially looking out for Bikes and Cyclists We talked over many different approaches. One of the things we came up with was more awareness in the hazard perception side of the theory, using scenarios like doors opening onto oncoming traffic. How Bikes (in general) will avoid pot holes and other hazards in the road, blind spots and how to highlight potential dangers with the lack of vision for larger vehicles. Andy Bull from Jellylearn who’s company designs the clips was in agreement that this would be one of the best ways to help educate people in the dangers that we so often face using the roads. We plan to meet up in the near future and discuss this further including other ways to change the way drivers interact. It was a very successful meeting and I left feeling very positive that things are going to change for the better. I am now working on a potential advertising campaign to highlight other areas road users should be aware of. I was told that in an exam situation people don’t always fully comprehend educational videos as they are eager to pass the test. Research has gone into this and I listened to their advice. This part is still in negotiation but I am only interested in what works. I am now exploring other avenues for that side of the education. The guys at DVSA were also in full support of educating younger children so they grow up with a better idea of how to look out for each other when they start to drive. We were all in agreement Its not down to the chosen mode of transport that’s the problem, be it cyclist/ motorcyclist or car. It’s down to the human driving/riding it. More care and attention needs to be taken as there are some really reckless decisions being made out there. Reckless decisions with mammoth consequences. Too often You do see cyclist’s jumping lights.. you see some motorcyclists dangerously filtering traffic You see car users using their phones but please don’t let that deter you from losing the will to be a better road user. Live on Jeremy vine at 1pm today Bbc radio 2. Thank you all for making this possible. Ria
