Make Reporting Cat Hit-and-Runs Mandatory

Make Reporting Cat Hit-and-Runs Mandatory
The Issue
To lose a cat this way is so traumatic & heartbreaking. I know changing the law won't bring them back but it might make people think before just driving off, or in the case of Frankie not even stopping. It's now mandatory to have them chipped, so why isn't it mandatory to report if you hit one? This isn't about blame, it's about doing the right thing. Every day, countless cats are left injured or worse after hit-and-run incidents. Unlike accidents involving dogs or humans, there is often no legal obligation for drivers to report hitting a cat, letting negligence go unchecked and leaving injured animals without urgent care. Cats have as much right to safety and legal protection as any other living being, and it is time our laws reflect this necessity.
Requiring drivers to report vehicular accidents involving cats would ensure that injured animals receive the immediate medical attention they need. It would also promote accountability and foster a sense of responsibility among drivers. According to the American Humane Association, approximately 10 million pets are lost every year, and many of those are involved in vehicle-related incidents. Implementing mandatory reporting for accidents involving cats can play a vital role in lessening these numbers.
Additionally, existing animal welfare laws in many countries already protect domestic animals like dogs, requiring involvement of local authorities if they are injured on the road. Cats deserve similar consideration and compassion. The lack of a consistent policy for cats across states contributes to their vulnerability. By requiring drivers to report cat hit-and-runs, authorities can collect data to identify accident-prone areas and implement measures to prevent future incidents.
This change is not only beneficial for our feline companions but also ensures a more humane and caring society. I urge lawmakers to take immediate steps to amend municipal and state laws, demanding that similar protocols apply to incidents involving cats. Your signature can make a significant impact on our community and help save many feline lives from being tragically cut short. Please sign this petition to advocate for mandatory reporting of cat hit-and-run incidents.
